Is Knoxville water hard?
East Tennessee sits on limestone, and water that moves through limestone picks up calcium and magnesium. That’s hard water. It’s safe to drink, but it’s what leaves spots on your glasses, film on your shower door, scale inside your water heater, and a chalky ring in the toilet. Softening or conditioning solves all of those at once.
What’s the difference between a water softener and a filter?
A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hardness — that’s the scale-and-spots problem. A filter targets things you taste, smell, or want out: chlorine, sediment, iron, sulfur odors. Many homes benefit from both, in sequence. We test your water first and recommend based on what’s actually in it.
How do I know which system I need?
We start with a water test at your home, not a sales pitch. Hardness, chlorine, iron, sediment, and pH tell us what to treat. Then we size the system to your household’s water use so it regenerates on a sensible schedule. A system that’s too small underperforms; one that’s too large wastes salt and water.
Will a filtration system help my water heater last longer?
Yes, measurably. Scale is the enemy of both tank and tankless water heaters — it insulates heating surfaces, forces longer run times, and shortens equipment life. Softened water means less sediment in the tank, less scale in a tankless heat exchanger, and less buildup in faucets and shower heads throughout the house.
Do these systems need maintenance?
Salt-based softeners need salt added periodically and a check of the resin and control valve annually. Filter systems need cartridge or media changes on a schedule that depends on the type and your water. We handle all of it, and annual system service is included for Hard Knox Home Club members.
Where does the system get installed?
Whole-home systems go in at the point where water enters the house — typically a garage, basement, crawl space, or utility area — so every tap downstream is treated. Point-of-use options like an under-sink drinking water filter are also available if you only want treated water at the kitchen.
How much does whole-home water filtration cost?
It depends on the type of system, its capacity, and the plumbing needed to tie it in. We give you a firm installed price after the water test, along with what the system will and won’t fix — no vague promises. Financing is available if you’d prefer monthly payments.
